Kumatchiki and me (Giovanni) (a.k.a the bears) were asked to set up "Rane Scratch Live".
This is very good for DJ's who know lots of good tracks (and own a laptop..don't forget that bit !..we have an i-book 1.3ghz) and want to play different music depending on the crowd's mood / club situation etc...with this equipment, you can bring your huge music collection with you to the club, on your computer's hard drive and play them as normal records...sounds unbelievable, lets see..

Here we have the box of "rane scratch live"...we are excited to open it and look inside..it's like christmas.!
|
![]() |
Inside, you have the cables, the interface, controller records / cd's and the software, all you need... and luckily for us..a manual with pictures ! |
![]() |
mmm...you got something underneath... |
![]() |
Oh dear me, they are the records ! I wondered where they were...I still don't understand how they work, but it doesn't matter, lets move on. |
![]() |
this is the box that connects your mixer and to your computer...it's very tiny and very light...but it feels tough (like kumatchki). |
![]() |
1 - Now, first of all, you have to install the software onto your computer. I thought it would be really complicated, but all you have to do is double click, follow the on screen prompts and install, it was easy enough to do with my paw...now...restart ! |
![]() |
Restarting my computer... i got to wait a minute, so i will play a bit of Dragon Quest 8....yipee! |
![]() |
2 - connect your box and computer..just a USB cable from the interface to your computer. |
![]() |
taddaaaah! easy. |
![]() |
3- turntable numer one's output to the interfaces input number 1. |
![]() |
There you are, easy...do the same for turntable number 2 and interface input number 2. |
![]() |
4- Connect your mixer's inputs to the outputs from the interface..These cables look a bit complicated, but no time for hesitation. |
![]() |
rrr.. the back of the mixer is really dusty ...oops...that is our job to clean behind here...we forgot. |
![]() |
cleaning the back of the mixer... |
![]() |
While Kuma is cleaning the back of the mixer, we connect the cables to the interface,"LINE" is for playing from your computer .. |
![]() |
and "THRU" is for playing from actual records when you decide to play a new record you just bought (before you had chace to digitise it) from vinyl, you can still do it without changing settings or anything, that's amazing!...just switch over from line to phono on your d.j mixer. |
![]() |
here, you plug all the cables into the back of your mixer... from the outputs on the 'scratch live' box |
![]() |
Tarahhhh....ooops..well, this is a temporary set-up...our turntable's output cable was a bit short... |
![]() |
5 - Calibration....This will make a nice relationship between the controller records and your computer, from the main page (this picture), click "Setup" and you go to a different page. The "Setup" button is located on the top right hand corner of the main screen. |
![]() |
5-1 Put on both your Rane controller records.... without pressing the start button.. but with the needle resting on the vinyl. |
![]() |
5-2 - first you need to click on the threshhold button, this helps eliminate background noise and get's the cleanest singal possible... Next you can start both records; you will see green circles, one on the left for the left turntable and one on the right for the right turntable...easy so far ! |
![]() |
you need to make the inner green circle as round as possible...adjust the 'balance' controls to help acheive the best circle shape...by doing this the software will better track the controller records..next, to the library !..woo hoo ! |
![]() |
this is the library and browser section...sorry about the bad picture quality, i will ask gio to do a proper screenshot soon. Anyway, I didn't need to set up anything, all i had to do was click 'import' and navigate to the music on my hardrive..mine is in my i-tunes folder.. |
![]() |
All you have to do now is drag a track from your music folder to this software's library (onto the 'all' section), and then drag the track once again to the main circle things on the screen, they represent your two turntables....if you prefer you can also use special Rane c.d's instead of the records to control your files....kuma prefers this as he is so small ..ha ha ! |
![]() |
now, you play the rane vinyl, and it is playing the track from your computer!.. WOW!!!!!!!! and the sound is really good quality too!!!...amazing ! Of course, you can play your normal records if you usethe "THRU" cables too. we bears can totally recommend "Rane Scratch Live" to anyone who is looking for this kind of system... |
